Are we aware that we are salt and light ?

Fr. Steve posed this question in his reflection on Sunday’s Gospel taken from Matthew, Chapter 5.    Jesus said, “You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.”

Are we Christians aware that we are light?  Are we aware that others are seeking this light?  Are we aware that others are seeking this light in us?  These are important questions because they make us conscience of the need to lead lives in harmony with the Light of Christ we bear within us.

They are important because they bring to the forefront of our minds the detriment we bring others when our Christian lives are not authentic.  They are important because they lead us to intentional discipleship which is to say an active following of Jesus so that we and others might live by the light and dwell no longer in darkness.

They are important because they highlight the poignancy of Jesus’ rhetorical question in today’s Gospel, “But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?”  They are important because they help us understand the uselessness of being Christian in name only as Jesus said: “But if salt loses its taste, with what can it be seasoned?  It is no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.”

How are we intentionally following Christ this week?  How are we being salt for others?
